feed the children

a trucker is driving at night, and stops for a moment at the side of the dark road.
A group of children flock to him, the tallest, is about seven, the youngest maybe four years old.
They are alone and wandering and ask him for a ride.
He brings them to my door, and asks for a place to stop and rest.

I let him in, and the children stay outside in the cold dark night.

And then the seven year old knocks on the door and asks to be fed.
As soon as I agree, the others, three or maybe four others flock in, there are two girls, they are both dark skinned but also Hispanic. The rest are boys and they are Afrocentric. I tell them sternly after having fed them supper that they may not sleep here. The youngest begins to wail and the older girl tells me when I ask that they are accustomed to sleeping in public bathrooms. I later find out that the oldest boy will find someone in the bathroom to take him home but only if he agrees to bring the rest of the children and give them safe lodging for the night. I then realize that when I let him in the door, they assume that they were welcome for the night as well.

The children are outside crying. I am such an ass, "Come in children" I tell them, and I prepare cinnamon raisin rolls for the morning.

That night, once the children are safe and sleeping, the trucker, who is quite young, opens a can of stewed tomatos, and salts them, he prepares to eat them cold in a bowl. Silly trucker, he does not smell the wonderful food am cooking just for him, and stewed tomatos are exactly the missing ingredient! I take the bowl and add it to the mix. a melange of fresh basil and grains and sauce I don't know exactly what, but it was the best food he had ever eaten he said (i hear that a lot).

When the children wake up, I decide they will stay with me, little gypsy kids. Nobody knows who they are or where they belong. Somehow, I send them off to school. Then I turn to assess the trucker. He is tall and thin and quite young for so much responsibility, with straight brown hair, and a certain look in his eye that says that he would like to stay too.
